Introduction
"Noun.plurk (plüer-kh) - A really snazzy site that allows you to showcase the events that make up your life in deliciously digestible chunks. Low in fat, 5 calories per serving, yet chock full of goodness.
Verb.plurk (plüer-kh) - To chronicle the events of your always on, action-packed, storybook, semi-charmed kinda life." (Plurk)
Advantages of the tool
"Plurk is an easy way to chronicle and share the things you do, the way you feel, and all the other things in between that make up your life, with the people close to you. It's instant gratification, instant self-indulgence, instant celebrity, instantly YOU. Share your life stream, live your life….Plurk!" (Plurk)
Plurk is an efficient way for students to display their thoughts and ideas in Spanish. It effectively organizes your ideas in a way that is easy for others to look through and it doesn't overwhelm the students by having to use too much Spanish at once . Using a site like Plurk also enhances learning because it is a more exciting and stimulating way for students to practice their language skills than writing ideas down on a piece of paper.
Disadvantages (limitations) of the tool
Plurk is a great way for students to practice their Spanish by describing themselves and what they do throughout the day. However, it’s only function is to post short personal blurbs. Therefore, its usefulness in an educational setting are exceedingly limited.
Application of the tool in your subject area
One way to implement Plurk in a Spanish Classroom is to create a classroom-wide Plurk community. Each student would create an account specifically for the class. Their entire Plurk experience on this account would be conducted entirely in Spanish, from their personal profile to their daily blurbs. This would provide a way for the students to practice talking about themselves and their days in Spanish as well as practicing their comprehensive skills by reading “Plurks” from their peers. Each student would be required to “Plurk” and respond to other students’ “Plurks” a certain number of times per week.
